TAXONOMIC CLASSIFICATION - HUMAN BEING

Let us simplify what a Taxonomic Classification is by looking at the Human Being.
Scientists have classified different life forms on earth into 8 groups.
This classification is called the Taxonomic Classification.
Think of the groups in the Classification as steps on a ladder.
  • DOMAIN: Eukaryote
  • KINGDOM: Animals
  • PHYLUM: Chordate
  • CLASS: Mammals
  • ORDER: Primates
  • FAMILY: Hominidae
  • GENUS: Homo
  • SPECIES: Sapiens

 * Discussion:

Have you heard of the term Homo Sapiens?
That is the term for a Human Being.
Do you know what language that is? Latin.
Homo =  Man, and Sapiens= Wise

* In the Taxonomic Classification for the human being, SPECIES: Sapiens is at the bottom of the ladder under GENUS: Homo.

 * Now, let us climb one more step on the taxonomic ladder.
The Homo Sapiens belongs to a FAMILY: Hominidae.

 * Do you think that there are other species, besides Homo Sapiens, that belong to FAMILY: Hominidae? Living creatures that act and even look similar to humans?
Yes, animals like monkeys.
We are all called Primates. Can you name other Primates?

Together, we all belong in the Taxonomic Classification ORDER: Primates.

 * One step higher on the ladder is CLASS: Mammals. Mammals are warm-blooded vertebrae animals that have hair or fur, with females giving birth to live babies, and secreting milk to nourish the young.
Discuss Human Beings and other living Mammals.

 * The next step on the ladder is PHYLUM. PHYLUM in Latin refers to race or clan. Broadly speaking, animals with vertebrae are labelled Chordata.
Discuss Human Beings as Chordata.

* One step higher, we find Human Beings belonging to the KINGDOM Animals.
Discuss other Kingdoms, such as Plants, Fungi and Minerals.

 * The last step on the ladder is the DOMAIN: Eukaryote.
All living organisms, including animals, containing cells with a nucleus within a membrane, are called Eukaryote.

 TAXONOMIC CLASSIFICATION - OYSTER MUSHROOM

CLASSIFICATION

DOMAIN:

Eukaryote

KINGDOM:

Fungi

PHYLUM:

Basidiomycota

CLASS:

Hymenomycetes

ORDER:

Agaricales

FAMILY:

Tricholomataceae

GENUS:

Pleurotus

SPECIES:

Pleurotus ostreatus

* The interesting thing is that both the Human Being and the Oyster Mushroom belong to the DOMAIN Eukaryote. Mushrooms breathe, consume other life forms, and reach out to each other through their root systems in order to germinate and bear fruit. The mycelium function as a communication system.

 *  Whereas the Human Being belongs to the KINGDOM: Animals, mushrooms, molds, yeasts and rusts belong to the KINGDOM Fungi.
